Living in your home

Q1. Can I take in a lodger?

Yes, you can take in lodgers in your home as long as it does not become overcrowded, please ask us first. Taking in a lodger will probably reduce your housing benefit and income support, our welfare benefits advisor can explain this. If you move out the lodger must also leave the property.

Q2. Can I sublet my home?

No, you cannot sublet or assign the whole of your home. If you continue to live at home, you do have the right to sub-let part of your home as long as it does not become overcrowded, please ask us first. Subletting will probably reduce your housing benefit and income support, our welfare benefits advisor can explain this. If you move out any sub-tenants must also leave the property.

Q3. I'd like to keep a pet. Is this okay?

If you would like to keep a pet you should write in for permission for each animal you would like to keep. We will not unreasonably withhold permission to keep a pet and will consider each case on its merits.

The following restrictions to pet ownership will apply:

  • Horses and livestock are not permitted in any property
  • Dogs are not permitted in flats
  • Not more than two dogs are permitted in a house

Q4. There is an abandoned car in the communal car park, how can we get it moved?

If you think that a car has been abandoned in your neighbourhood or it appears unroadworthy please contact your Area Officer. We will make some checks and contact the council to ensure that the vehicle is removed.

Q5. Can I buy the property I live in?

Some of our properties, but not all, can be purchased. Please see the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire information.
